BLU-RAY PLAYER Samsung BD-C7900

2010 is a huge year for HDTVs as many of the newest high-end models introduced come with 3D features so you can experience the same immersive action you get in theaters in the comfort of your home. Samsung has been really quick off the blocks with a slew of 3D players and the Samsung BD-C7900 is one of the top in the lineup. To enjoy the full glory of 3D you will also need active shutter 3D glasses for the whole family.

Design & Connectivity

Design innovation is a hallmark of Samsung products as can be evidenced from their ultra thin LED TVs of late. The Samsung BD-C7900 player similarly has an extremely slim profile measuring only 1.6″ tall. Samsung has taken the design up a notch with a transparent top allowing you can see the disc spinning inside. The controls on the top panel are touch-sensitive. The whole package looks sleek, stylish and high tech.
You will not be short of connectivity options as the BD-C7900 now comes with two of the latest HDMI ver 1.4 outputs. There is an Ethernet port at the back, stereo analog outputs and a USB port. A 1Gb memory is also built-in to support BD-Live content.
Samsung has also designed their new players with improved energy efficiency by using new technologies such as loader duty control, low voltage spindle motor, and analog video detect, which contribute to a reduced power consumption of 13W during disc playback, and just 0.1W in stand-by mode. The player is compliant to the more stringent EnergyStar® 4.0 guidelines.

Features

Other than the design, the Samsung BD-C7900 brings a complete set of features present in the least expensive BD-C6800 model. It also throws in a couple of nice extras as well without bumping up the price too much.
The BD-C7900 serves as a full 3D multimedia center even if it isn’t the highest-end model. What matters is that it fully supports HD content along with the newer HD titles that have 3D technologies. Although there are not many titles that fully support 3D, the Samsung BD-C7900 has the ability to convert standard 2D movies and sports into 3D making the 3D active glasses more worth the money and it certainly makes the new Samsung 3DTVs more attractive as well.
Outside the 3D world, the Samsung BD-C7900 brings out all of the nice goodies expected in a standard 2010 Blu-ray player including BD-Live 2.0 support so any titles with the BD-Live logo can be enjoyed to their fullest by downloading the extra content, images, and subtitles via Internet. The BD-C7900 provides two ways to connect to the Internet with the first being through the Ethernet and the other more convenient way through a wireless connection where the WLAN is built-in.
Establishing a connection to the Internet is also crucial to take advantage of the Internet@TV and Samsung Apps features. All of the apps featured are web-connected and do not require a TV with Internet support making the BD-C7900 a nice addition to any older Samsung TV as well. Some of the nice web applications include BLOCKBUSTER and Netflix so subscribers can conveniently stream shows and movies for instant viewing. Some nice additions include access to Facebook, Pandora, YouTube, various interactive games, and many news sites.
The USB port allows any peripheral with storage or a flash disk can be read by the player as long as it has JPEG, MP3, DivX, AVCHD, and MKV files. Any of these files burned on to CDs and DVDs can be read as well. With DivX HD also being supported, any short-length HD content found in these discs can be fully played back in good quality.

Performance

The playback performance of Blu-ray discs are good whether they are 3D or not and the Ultra Fast Play feature loads these titles quickly eliminating those dramatic waiting periods. Once the title loads, an option can be used to fit the title perfectly on the screen using the “Screen Fit” feature. This is useful for viewing any 21:9 aspect ratio content on a 16:9 aspect display so there should be no black bands present. Older DVD and CD titles should look better as well since they can be upscaled to high resolutions.

Bottom Line

The Samsung BD-C7900 is a speedy performer that displays 3D and 2D content in gorgeous colors. This experience can be best realized when used with a new Samsung display. In addition, the Anynet+ feature can be used so a single remote control can operate the entire 3D home theater system.
